Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon & Clinical Director
Professor Johnny Moore is a highly respected Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and Clinical Director of Cathedral Eye Clinic, specialising in ocular surface reconstruction, laser refractive surgery, cataract, and other intra-ocular eye surgery, with approximately 25,000 treatments completed. He holds a medical degree from Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) and completed his ophthalmology training in Belfast before gaining a fellowship in Flinders Hospital, South Australia, and a PhD in Ophthalmology from QUB. He also held a research fellowship at Harvard Medical School under Professors Tony Adamis and Dimitri Azar. Since 2007, he has served as a consultant ophthalmologist at the Mater Hospital, Belfast Trust, developing advanced anterior segment services and pioneering various surgical techniques.
Prof. Moore is actively involved in various professional organizations and boards. He serves on panels at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, where he contributes to exam setting and acts as a medical examiner. He is also an active reviewer for numerous international ophthalmic journals and participates in global conferences, such as presenting at the 26th BSRS Annual Scientific Congress in 2019.
In addition to his clinical work, Prof. Moore is dedicated to education and training. He co-runs an online PGDip/MSc Cataract and Refractive Surgery course through the University of Ulster, providing training to global professionals. He also created an online surgical training video platform aimed at providing free resources, particularly for those in third-world countries. Prof. Moore has contributed significantly to evidence-based research and has been involved in various innovative projects, such as the use of robotics in eye surgery, in collaboration with Queen’s University Belfast.
Prof. Moore is heavily involved in research, particularly in the development of novel genetic tools for managing corneal and ocular surface pathologies. He has achieved significant publications through his research efforts, including collaborations with the University of Ulster and Harvard Medical School. He also serves as a Visiting Professor at Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital, China, where he presented a lecture on Intraocular Lens Technology upon receiving his Visiting Professorship in 2018.
Prof. Moore actively supports charitable initiatives, including working with the Khmer Sight Foundation in Cambodia and the Christian Blind Mission in Zimbabwe. He also fosters international collaborations, such as welcoming a Chinese delegation in 2018 to explore robotics in ophthalmology and contributing to advancements in medical futures.
Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon & Clinical Director
Over 3,000 eye procedures performed and care provided for over 8,000 patients in consultation clinics. Mr. Mandal earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) from the University of Birmingham, during which he carried out an undergraduate research elective at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Miami, USA. Following this, he completed a seven-year residency at the London School of Ophthalmology. His clinical career includes roles at Queens Hospital Essex, where he was a Senior House Officer Ophthalmologist, and at the Western Eye Hospital in London. He became a Specialist Registrar Ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, and completed two fellowships in Cornea and Cataract Surgery at Moorfields.
In 2019, Mr. Mandal completed a Refractive Surgery Fellowship on Harley Street in London. After performing over 1,000 LASIK and PRK surgeries and 1,000 refractive lens exchange surgeries, he completed a fourth fellowship in complex cornea and cataract surgery at Vancouver General Hospital at the University of British Columbia. He also holds a specialist licence to practice in Canada.
Mr. Mandal has significant experience in training and supervising junior surgeons, adding to his already extensive expertise in ophthalmic surgery. His training and experience align with the procedures he offers patients at Cathedral Eye Clinic.
Mr. Mandal is a Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO) and a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth). He holds the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Refraction Certificate (2014) and the Certificate of Laser Refractive Surgery (2023). He also possesses a Postgraduate Diploma in Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
Mr. Mandal’s advanced training in ophthalmology and refractive surgery stems from a combination of rigorous academic qualifications, clinical residencies, and specialty fellowships. This comprehensive training supports the wide range of procedures he offers, including cataract, cornea, and refractive surgery.
Mr. Mandal has co-authored several peer-reviewed journal articles on ocular health. He has delivered numerous presentations at prestigious international conferences, such as the European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons Congress, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Annual Scientific Meetings, and Canadian Ophthalmology Society events.
Mr. Mandal has actively participated in charitable missions with the Khmer Sight Foundation, completing three missions to Cambodia. During these missions, he collaborated with international teams of doctors to work alongside local optometrists, medical students, and junior ophthalmologists. He provided critical training and mentorship to local healthcare providers and performed complex eye surgeries in underserved communities in Phnom Penh.

Mr. Stephen Stewart, MBBS MA PgDipCRS CertLRS FRCOphth, is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specializing in cataract, refractive, and complex anterior segment surgery. He graduated with distinction from the University of Cambridge and University College London Medical Schools. At UCL, he was awarded the Allen Goldsmith Prize in Ophthalmology and the TC Yu Bequest Award, supporting his medical elective in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Auckland.
He completed his ophthalmology specialty training in the Northern Ireland Deanery and undertook fellowships in cataract and refractive surgery in Belfast with Professor Johnny Moore, and in cataract, implant, and complex anterior segment surgery with Dr. Tun Kuan Yeo at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore.
Stephen became a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in 2019. He actively contributes to the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ National Ophthalmology Database Audit as a member of the Cataract Advisory Group.
Stephen earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Cataract and Refractive Surgery through the University of Ulster in 2018 and was awarded the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ prestigious Certificate in Laser Refractive Surgery in 2021. He has demonstrated a commitment to advancing surgical proficiency through organising and delivering regional and international surgical skills courses related to cataract and anterior segment surgery techniques.
Stephen’s primary research focus is on the outcomes and safety of cataract and refractive surgery. He has published his work in peer-reviewed journals and presented extensively at international conferences. Currently, he is conducting research into using machine learning to improve astigmatism correction outcomes during cataract surgery, in collaboration with Cathedral Eye Clinic and the Centre for Public Health at Queen’s University Belfast.
Stephen has worked with the Khmer Sight Foundation in Cambodia, providing cataract surgery to patients in resource-limited settings.
Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon
With more than 25 years of experience, Mr. Chan has been practising at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital since 1995. After spending a year at Sydney Eye Hospital, he took up his consultancy post in 2005. Mr. Chan has also been consulting at Cathedral Eye Clinic for the past 10 years. He has significant expertise in vitreoretinal, cataract, and lens replacement surgery.
Mr. Chan has published a wide range of papers on topics such as diabetic retinopathy in pregnancy, age-related macular degeneration, serious ocular and adnexal injuries, YAG posterior capsulotomy, and the management of retinal tear.
Mr. Chan has delivered numerous presentations worldwide on the topics of his research and expertise. He continues to teach and remains actively involved in auditing, clinical, and laboratory research projects.

Mr. Gerard Reid, MB BCh, BAO, MSc, FRCOphth, graduated from medical school at Queen’s University Belfast and earned a master’s degree in Ophthalmology (specializing in Retina) from University College London. He completed his specialty training in ophthalmology in Northern Ireland.
Following this, he undertook two competitive international fellowships:
Mr. Reid became a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in 2021 and was appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust in 2023.

With over 10 years of consultancy experience, Mr. McGimpsey’s specialism is in Vitreoretinal surgery and macular diseases, performing treatments such as cataract surgery, treatments for retinal detachment, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and lid surgery.

Mr. Richard Best has over 20 years of experience as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, with particular interest in cataract surgery and vitreoretinal surgery. Mr Best acted as Clinical Director for Ophthalmology at the Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast between 2004-2008.

Mr. Updendran is a vastly experienced ophthalmic surgeon with retinal, cataract and laser surgery experience and who has held posts in the Birmingham Midland Eye Centre, Moorfields Eye Hospital in Dubai and, more recently, at Belfast Health and Social Care Trust.

Mr. Kamalarajah graduated in Medicine from the University of Dundee in 1991. He underwent specialist training in general ophthalmology at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, from 1994 to 2002. He completed a one-year fellowship in Oculoplastic and Orbital Surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, from June 2002 to June 2003. Mr. Kamalarajah was awarded the higher degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD) at Queen’s University Belfast in 2002 for his research on infectious endophthalmitis following cataract surgery and biofilm characterization from intraocular lenses.
He was appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmologist with a specialist interest in Oculoplastic surgery at the Western Trust in August 2003, where he worked until May 2011. Currently, he is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at both the Belfast Trust and Cathedral Eye Clinic, specializing in Oculoplastic, Orbital, and Lacrimal Surgery. He has performed over 6,000 cataract operations and numerous Oculoplastic surgical procedures.
Mr. Kamalarajah is a Fellow of The Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth) and a member of The British Medical Association (BMA) and the British Oculoplastic Surgeons Society (BOPSS).
Mr. Kamalarajah has extensive experience in the field of ophthalmology, particularly in Oculoplastic surgery. His training includes specialist courses in general ophthalmology and a dedicated fellowship in Oculoplastic and Orbital Surgery. He has worked in prominent healthcare institutions, providing expertise in both general ophthalmology and specialised Oculoplastic procedures.
Mr. Kamalarajah’s research focused on the epidemiology and risk factors for presumed infectious endophthalmitis following cataract surgery in the UK. He also conducted a laboratory-based study on the characterization of biofilm from intraocular lenses retrieved from patients with infective endophthalmitis. This research contributed to his MD degree at Queen’s University Belfast in 2002.
