Cathedral Eye Clinic are proud to be the only clinic in Ireland offering the CAIRS procedure. CAIRS offers a safer, less invasive option for treating keratoconus. It provides significant vision and shape improvement while keeping future treatment options open. For those with keratoconus, CAIRS is a revolutionary solution with quick recovery and fewer risks compared to traditional surgeries
CAIRS stands for Corneal Allogenic Intrastromal Ring Segments. It’s a treatment for keratoconus, a condition where the cornea (the clear window at the front of the eye) gets thin and cone-shaped, causing blurry vision. In CAIRS, small segments of human donor cornea tissue are placed into the patient’s cornea to help reshape and strengthen it.
The donor cornea is prepared by removing its outer layers (epithelium and endothelium) and then sterilised.
The donor cornea is then cut into a ring shape using a specialised tool with a double-bladed steel CAIRS trephine. This ring is then carefully divided into segments.
These segments are placed into a circular channel created in the patient’s cornea. This channel is made with our femtosecond laser for precision

Unlike DALK, which uses many stitches, CAIRS doesn’t require any. This reduces the risk of infections and other problems related to stitches.
CAIRS uses much less donor tissue compared to DALK, which lowers the risk of the body rejecting the tissue.
CAIRS doesn’t interfere with the central part of the vision, so there’s no risk of vision problems caused by the surgery itself.
CAIRS is safer because it avoids deeper layers of the cornea, reducing the risk of complications like accidental perforations.
The surgery takes less time, and patients recover quicker. It’s also easier for surgeons to learn and perform.
Improved vision with and without glasses or contact lenses.
Less blurriness caused by irregular cornea shape.
The cornea becomes thicker where it had thinned out.
